Gold continues to carry strong cultural and emotional significance across the UAE, particularly as a wedding gift, family heirloom and store of value. Younger shoppers, however, are adding practicality and personal expression to that equation. As tastes evolve, this UAE Jewellery News report finds that delicate chains, rings, bracelets and pendants are becoming increasingly attractive to buyers seeking versatility without the price tag associated with heavier pieces.

Everyday Gold Gains Ground

Amreen Iqbal, founder and creative director of Dubai-based Piece of You, has observed that consumers increasingly want jewelry they can wear regularly, combine with other pieces and style in different ways. For younger buyers especially, jewelry is becoming an extension of personal identity rather than something reserved exclusively for celebrations.

Shamlal Ahamed, managing director of international operations at Malabar Gold & Diamonds, has also identified lighter jewelry as one of the most noticeable changes in younger consumers’ preferences. Minimalist pieces are particularly appealing because they can move easily between work, casual outings and more formal occasions.

High Prices Reshape Buying Habits

The shift comes as elevated gold prices encourage shoppers to think carefully about weight and affordability. For first-time buyers, smaller pieces offer an opportunity to own gold without committing to the considerably higher cost of traditional heavyweight jewelry.

Interest in 18-karat gold has also grown among younger shoppers. Its durability and suitability for contemporary designs make it attractive for jewelry intended to be worn frequently.

John Paul Alukkas, chief executive of Joyalukkas Jewellery, has noted that younger customers increasingly seek pieces versatile enough for work, informal gatherings and weddings. Chirag Vora, managing director of Bafleh Jewellery, has similarly observed greater caution among first-time buyers when gold prices are high.

Tradition Is Changing, Not Disappearing

Heavy gold still commands an important place at weddings, engagements and religious and cultural celebrations. Gold also remains a popular way of marking personal milestones, including a first job or career achievement.

What is changing is not young consumers’ appreciation of gold, but their definition of desirable gold jewelry. Lighter weights, contemporary styling and everyday practicality are giving a new generation more ways to participate in a deeply established tradition without surrendering individuality or financial value.
