Gems News: A Rare Farewell to Argyle’s Legacy

Rio Tinto has unveiled its last and most symbolic offering of fancy-colored diamonds in what will be remembered as a historic moment for the global gem trade. The Beyond Rare Tender, closing on October 20, will feature 52 lots totaling 45.44 carats, a collection aptly named Into the Light. Among these offerings are extraordinary pink, violet, blue and red diamonds mined from the now-shuttered Argyle mine in Australia and a select number of rare stones from the Diavik deposit in Canada, which is scheduled to close operations in 2026. According to this Gems News report, these final stones represent not only rare beauty but also the end of an era for two of the world’s most iconic diamond mines.

Masterpieces And Single Stones on Display

The collection includes six dazzling “Masterpieces,” carefully curated sets that reflect the pinnacle of production from Argyle and Diavik. Rio Tinto will also present 39 single diamonds alongside seven additional curated sets. A highlight of the tender is one fancy-red diamond, a gem of extreme rarity, positioned alongside 12 fancy-violet stones and an impressive 76 diamonds in shades of pink, purple-pink, and purplish-pink. Adding even more prestige are two flawless white diamonds from Diavik: a 5.11-carat emerald-cut and a 3.02-carat pear-shaped stone. A 6.12-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond from the Canadian deposit adds further depth to the vibrant palette.

Exhibitions Across Global Hubs

Rio Tinto will showcase the lots in global diamond centers including Hong Kong, Australia, and Antwerp before bids are finalized. This strategic exhibition tour highlights the company’s recognition of international demand and ensures the final Argyle collection will be seen by the world’s top collectors and connoisseurs. Patrick Coppens, Rio Tinto’s general manager of sales and marketing for diamonds, emphasized the significance of this event, noting that no other mining company holds stewardship of such a diverse and breathtaking range of colored stones.

A Lasting Legacy for Collectors

The Beyond Rare Tender represents more than a sale—it is the final chapter of Argyle’s story and a symbolic passing of history into private hands. Collectors and investors know that owning one of these stones means possessing a fragment of geological and cultural heritage that will never be replicated. The tender underscores the scarcity of naturally occurring colored diamonds, making these pieces not only symbols of beauty but also investments that are likely to increase in value as supply diminishes forever.
